Progress on the Cutting Fashion Show

Right now is the fun part.

Earlier this month was the deadline for the entire collection completed in color.

Yesterday was the deadline for the first look completed.

The best part? Everyone reports to me! I get to see everyone's creations and hear about their inspiration! I love it!

I think I love my job... wait, I'm not getting paid.

Well I love it anyways!

L.A. Fashion Week!

Nancy had an extra ticket for me and mom to go to a fashion show during L.A. fashion week! I flew down for the weekend and I loved it. It was the first professional fashion show I had been to, and it gave me TONS of ideas for putting on my own fashion show. It was AMAZING. Nancy collaborated with a designer in the show to produce a collection. I'm so grateful for the wonderful opportunity.

Celebrate Schools! Fashion Show

at the Provo Towne Centre Mall

This was my first event that I was in charge of at the Provo Towne Centre Mall. Luckily, I was able to use models from my modeling audition and they were all really excited to participate. I also went to a lot of different vendors in the mall and coordinated with them to participate. Some of them said they wanted to put their own outfits together, but they got busy so I was able to act as the stylist of the show and put all of the outfits together. The vendors that participated were: Downeast Basics, Urban Trends, Sole Envy, and Gap. It was such a fun show. I acted as the Emcee and commented on the outfits included. I also was in charge of the music- we used "New in Town" by Little Boots, thanks to a suggestion by Merliee Kartchner. Overall, it was a success!

Marketing Assistant at the Provo Towne Centre Mall

I have a new job! I LOVE it.

I am the Marketing Assistant at the Provo Towne Centre Mall. I work under J.P. Swain, who is the Marketing Director at the mall. I LOVE it. I actually went in originally to ask if I could do a fashion show at the mall as a volunteer, and she surprised me and said that she needs an assistant and offered me a job! So I work at the mall for about 20 hours a week plus the events. It's wonderful. I basically do whatever she needs me to do to help her out with my job.

My favorite responsibilities include:

- organizing and planning mall events
- coordinating and setting up music performers for the mall
- posting as the Provo Towne Centre on facebook
(check out the page and like it for me!) Click here to see what I do! (and like it)
- managing collateral and signage in the mall

Those are my favorite things about my job!

More updates to come....

BYU FASHION SHOW!!

Yes, you read that correctly.

I convinced BYU/SA to give me money to put on a fashion show at BYU. How awesome is that? VERY. Yes.

So originally they were going to have it be a part of a bigger event, but by the end I had convinced them that it was going to be so incredibly amazing that it needed to stand on its own.

MUCH has happened since the original proposal so let's get started!

Setting up a plan
BYU/SA has a certain protocol that must be followed and so I had to present my action plan to a committee that included deadlines, event dates, and the budgeting plan. Because they do their budget by semester, my action plan only included things that related to modeling auditions. Guess what? I got approved! Yippee! Off we go!

Kate Ashcroft, Assistant Director
Kate Ashcroft is a wonderful human being who wanted to know what she could do to be a part of this amazing opportunity. I talked with her and was very impressed by her willingness to take action and do so many things for the fashion show. So! Meet Kate Ashcroft- Assistant Director of the BYU Cutting Fashion Show! She is a wonderful blessing to me, and takes care of so many things including reminding people of deadlines, sending out emails with important information, and handling all of the photographers. She will also be one of the designers in the show.

Fashion Designer Interviews
This was one of the best parts of being the director of the show. I got to meet with all the different designers interested in participating in the show. In order to be considered, they needed to complete an application as well as design a mini collection with three cohesive looks. At first, I was worried that we wouldn't have enough designers. After all, I was the only person I knew that sewed at BYU before I worked in the costume shop. HOWEVER! These people came out of the woodworks! It is a wonderful experience to be able to meet with a fashion designer and get an inside look on their creativity and their passion. In the Cutting Fashion Show, we will have 12 designers.

Publicity
One of the great parts of working with BYU/SA is the Student Life Design team. I worked with a girl on the team named Alex. She was great to work with and had fantastic ideas for our collateral. I needed her to create signs and handouts to advertise the auditions and interviews for the show. We had a little trouble getting it out on time, but that wasn't Alex's fault. Overall, I was very happy with the signage that we produced.

Modeling Auditions
Auditions! I think on the day we had auditions it hit me that this show was actually going to happen. It's real! We had models coming in the required white v-neck, jeans, and heels outfit, and the designers were there ready to choose their models. I also had two of our photographers come and take pictures and video of the models to help identify them later. It went really smoothly. Angela and Monika, two of my designers, served as modeling coaches and taught the models a basic runway walk and had them practice a couple of times.

BYU TV also came to the auditions and filmed it! You can see the segment at 10:32.

Karstin Lake, Style Consultant

That's right, I, Karstin Lake, am a style consultant for a custom suit company- Dress Code.

I get to help men look like this:

Or I help them look super good in their conservative suit if they don't want to be too trendy.

Dress Code is one-of-a-kind. This is what happens when you want a custom suit:

1. First, you call the most stylish person you know because you know they'll have the best fashion advice (that would be me)
2. I set up an appointment with you in your home or office.
3. I come to your home with my fabric swatch books, my measuring tape, and my design form.
4. You pick the fabric you want for your suit (or dress shirt).
5. Together, we design a custom suit for you. Every detail can be personalized to what you want.
6. I measure you to ensure a perfect fit.
7. We do a celebratory dance because you just designed your soon-to-be favorite suit in the whole world.
8. In 4-6 weeks, I present you with your custom suit and you thank me by giving me a Ferrari.... maybe not, but this is one of the happiest days in your life.
9. You wear your suit. You feel great, everyone tells you that you look great, and your life is made.

Kick it!

Taylor Campbell is an artist and he designed these awesome pants for me! As soon as he was done, we had to go out somewhere where I could wear them! Obviously, frozen yogurt was the place to go- the best treat on earth and colorful walls!

Marquie got married!

Isn't she just beautiful???
This is EmmaLee, Marquie, and I
Well, since I was going to another wedding, I needed to find something new to wear! This one was a bit more casual than Cassi's, and so I decided on making a skirt out of this:
Before
I really should get a full length mirror
instead of standing on my tub.

EmmaJane gave me this dress as a hand-me-down a while ago, and I didn't like it as a dress, but I always knew I wanted to make it into a skirt. Today was the day! I decided on using black 2" elastic for the waistband. I had never made an elastic waisted skirt before, so it was an adventure!

I think it turned out classy and fun!

Bridal shower gift

Marquie Hutchings is getting married! The theme for the gift was "something she can use in the morning." So I made this darling apron! She loved it :)

The Wardrobe of a Sister Missionary

Kimberly's going on a mission to Oklahoma on June 6th! She really wanted to take this dress, but it was too short, so I lengthened the lengthened the lining to make it officially missionary-approved attire!

Wedding guest dress

all the pieces laid out

close-up, in production

Cassi and I at the wedding. Doesn't she look beautiful?
My roommate from freshman year, Cassi Lee, now Cassi Cheney, got married! So of course I had to get a new dress! ...or update an old one! That's exactly what I did. :) This is a hand-me-down dress that I accidentally put in the washer... where it was simply not allowed to be. So the fabric got a little bit drab looking... I think the patch work transformed the look from drab to vintage!

Inspiration collage

If you collect enough scraps from various magazines, you can turn time wasted watching a movie into time well used creating inspiration!

Night on the town!

I hemmed an old choir dress for a fun girl's night with Sara Perkinson! My necklace also broke, so I tied it up with a velvet ribbon.

Sometimes I inspire Vogue

I definitely designed this dress for my roommate Dani Mendel, in 2010. Way to rip off my idea, Vogue!

Valentine's Day!

With my darling friend, Emily.
My day time ensemble.
It's the only time when you can really wear pink and red together!

My evening outfit for my date with Taylor.
This is a dress I modified.
It used to have horrendous sleeves!

Hayli's Wedding Dress!

Hayli's getting married! We picked out her dress today! She tried on a LOT of dresses today, but this is the ONE! All the other dresses were pretty, but when she looked in the mirror while wearing this one, her face lit up!
